RAM President Frank Schillo stated, “We are extremely pleased that Westlake Village’s Community West Bank will handle membership sign-ups in person. It gives the public another opportunity to join us.” The in person sign-ups augment online membership applications at the RAM website and mailed applications sent to the RAM P.O. Box.

The Regional Art Museum is a non- profit 501(c)(3) tax exempt public benefit organization supported by membership, special events, donations and fundraising. The proposed 30,000 square foot museum will be located adjacent to the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza as unanimously approved by the Thousand Oaks City Council in June. Individual charter memberships start at $50 with a senior’s discount available at $35. Members receive newsletters and email updates, free admission to exhibits, and discounts on classes, workshops and events. A family membership is $60 and provides a second membership card for spouse or second adult in the family plus all individual membership benefits. Business and community organizations are welcomed with charter Patron membership at $500. Charter Golden Circle memberships at $1000 for individuals and groups will be acknowledged on a lobby plaque.

Community West Bank is located at 951 South Westlake Blvd, Suite 100 in Westlake Village. For more information contact Lori Marie Barlow, RAM Treasurer, at the bank 805 494-5172; or Pat Grant, Membership Chair, at 805 495-5960. A brochure describing RAM membership opportunities is available by calling 805 409-3598. Please leave your name, home address, email address, and phone number so the membership committee can contact you. Membership information and applications are also posted online at www.regionalartmuseum.org.

The non-profit Regional Art Museum is the fulfillment of a study by the Conejo/Las Virgenes Future Foundation which determined the need for an art museum to serve the Greater Conejo region from Calabasas to Newbury Park. The goals of RAM are: to provide a permanent location to house visual art collections; to provide educational art programs for all ages; to highlight local recognized artists with periodic showings; and to house and accommodate national and international traveling shows and exhibits.

"You can never plan the future by the past."
Edmund Burke

"Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. Although the technology is years away from commercial development, it does raise interesting possibilities for future applications. Apparently, the cells do not generate the same amount of power as current solar cells, but their low cost may offset their lack of efficiency. Imagine solar panels that can be easily transported and then mounted with only a staple gun. Maybe you could even print up a batch at home and take them on camping trips to keep your coffee warm. As a paper product, it may have the added benefit of being completely recyclable. MIT's discovery is not the first nexus between the printing industry and the production of solar panels. A company called Nanosolar uses printing equipment to produce solar electric foil at very high speeds. The foil is then laminated onto a substrate material to produce the solar panel. This is a significant breakthrough in reducing the cost of solar power.

Perhaps the wide adaptation of solar energy to replace fossil fuels is not as far into the future as we think.

Youth Congress Visits Los Robles Hospital

Youth Congress Leadership Students Enthusiastic
about visiting Los Robles Hospital.

"The Youth Congress meeting at the Los Robles Hospital was extremely interesting. I also liked hearing form Irene Brennick. She got me interested in volunteering there and I have already signed up to do so. In conclusion, I really liked last Thursdays meeting and I'm really glad we got the opportunity to go there." Madison Call

"The trip to the hospital was one of the best meetings so far. The part where we had to deduce which patient needed to be attended to first was very entertaining as well as educational. The speaker I liked the best was Irene Brennick. She made the volunteer program at the hospital sound not only a great way to get involved with the community, but also a great way to learn about the day-to-day functioning of the hospital. Being a 15 year-old, I can apply to become a volunteer there in a year and learn the ins and outs of being a doctor at the hospital." Jonathon Sears
"The session at Los Robles Hospital taught me a lot about the medical field that I did not know before. The nurses and Dr. Weil were very enthusiastic about there jobs which made me consider their field of work. Irene Brennick also incorporated a lot of knowledge of what goes on at the hospital besides the actual medical aspect such as marketing, volunteering, etc. This meeting was fascinating as well as informative of what goes on at a hospital, and what it needs to function. Overall it was very engaging." Effie Sklavenitis

"I found the meeting last Thursday to be very informative, and found the staff to be quite nice. The staff gave me a new perspective on the jobs of doctors and nurses." Steven Francus

I liked visiting the hospital a lot. I just became aware of the "Smart Pen" from Livescribe. The Smart Pen is actually a computer in a pen, complete with a video camera and microphone. That may not sound like a big deal, but the function of the Smart Pen differs dramatically from your laptop, Blackberry, or GPS device. Essentially, the Smart Pen gives connectivity to paper and pen. The pen is able to link what you write directly to your computer. You can take class notes with the pen, and later re-listen to the professor's actual words by simply touching that part of your notes with the pen. You can write in English and get a voice translation into another language. Or you can send an email by writing on a sheet of paper.

One downside is that the pen requires "smart paper," a paper pre-printed with microdots that allow the pen to "read" the image. However, the use of pre-printed paper does not appear to be a major obstacle to use of the Smart Pen. People are already using paper pre-printed with lines or grids, so the use of writing pads with micro-dots is not really a big change.

This technology links the paper world with the digital world. The potential applications go well beyond academia. Imagine seeing an ad in a magazine for a product you might want to buy. Putting the pen to the ad produces a verbal message of where you can buy that item and how much it costs. You can then make the purchase by writing "buy item" and signing your signature. Or imagine if your doctor could write your prescription and email it to your pharmacy at the same time. No doubt there are many more applications that haven't even been thought of yet. Perhaps this application of technology to the ordinary routines of daily life will bring about the biggest changes in the future.

Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center Celebrates 10 Years

December 11 will mark the 10 year aniversary of the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center. What makes the center truly remarkable is that it was a cooperative effort between two neighboring cities to build one recreation facility serving both communities. It is a unique project in the State of California. In addition to the two cities, the project received support from the County of Los Angeles, and the State, as well as significant funding from private donations. The Bank of America (Countrywide), deputies from the Lost Hills Sheriff station and hundreds of local residents contributed to the final project.

What is worth noting here is the recognition on the part of political and community leaders that the residents of the Conejo/Las Virgenes region should not be deprived of services because of political boundaries. In ten years, the Center has not become a political issue. The two cities created a joint powers board, made up of members from both cities, that oversees the facility. It has done a remarkable job of serving the greater region. Both cities can be proud of this record of cooperation.

"I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past."
                                                                  Thomas Jefferson
