Youth Congress Leadership's Inside Look at the Conejo Valley Unified School District

 Story by Ana Gougas

On the afternoon of December 11th, the Youth Congress leadership Program participants were able to meet, once again, with Dr. Jeffrey Baarstad, Superintendent of the Conejo School District, along with co-presenter, Dr. Betsy Connolly, a board member of the Conejo School District, who told us about their experiences in the field of education. They shared with us their knowledge of what makes a great education system and their experiences as supervising members of the Conejo School District.

We then gathered into 4 groups and role-played 4 different learning styles based on students’ interests and talked about how each learning style thought school would be best suited for them. We then discussed our ideas with all the members and each group had a completely different take on the subject; whether it was the disengaged students or the overachieving students.

It really showed us how everyone has different ideas and the schools try to accommodate most of them to make it the best it can be for all students. This meeting really showed us that the education system works and we thank Drs. Baarstad and Connolly for showing us that.
