Youth Congress Leadership Visits Las Virgenes Water District

Jeff Reinhardt Explains Water Distribution in California
Our visit to the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District February 9, 2011 was very informative. The speakers, led by Jeff Reinhardt, included, Carlos Reyes, Deborah Low, and Jacqy Gamble.  They enlightened us to the water problems currently facing California, and more importantly, the growing divide between the interests of Northern and Southern California. Using the information given to us about California’s water issues, we were divided into two interests groups. While we weren’t successful in resolving the North/South difference in interests, it was a very enjoyable and enlightening experience.

Youth Congress Leadership Visits East Valley Sheriff Station

Senior Deputy Jim DeSoto
On Wednesday, January 26th 2011, Youth Congress paid a visit to the  East Valley Sheriff’s Station in Thousand Oaks. While listening to Senior Deputy Jim DeSoto, we learned what it is like to have a career in law enforcement. There are many difficult aspects to such a job, and  it takes much courage and dedication.  Sgt. Eric Hatlee explained the function of the police department and presented many statistics about crime.  The personnel at the Police and Sheriff Station really put into perspective what goes into becoming a police officer, and the jobs incorporated that go beyond traffic regulation. After the presentation, we were lucky enough to have a personal tour of the station and see the offices of many different departments. Overall it was a very enlightening visit, and we really appreciate the efforts made by Sgt. Hatlee and Senior Deputy DeSoto.

Youth Congress Leadership at Kavli Theater

On Wednesday, January 12th, over 60 students participating in the Youth Congress Leadership Program gathered at the Kavli Theater in the Civic Arts Plaza. We were greeted by Mr. Tom Mitze, who is the Director of Cultural Affairs for Thousand Oaks. He introduced Mr. Gary Mintz who is the Technical Services Manager. When we first walked in, we all sat on stage in seats facing towards the center of the stage. The lights went out, and a single spotlight shone on a ballet dancer as she performed a solo dance. After this spectacular performance by dancer, Whitney Walsh, we were shown various lighting options often used during shows. Then, we were taken on a tour of the Kavli Theater, where we saw everything from the backstage area to the soundboard. Overall, it was a unique experience and everyone left with a new respect for the people who participate in a show and those who help put it on.
